10 Top Tips on How to Write a Private Staff CV

By November 14, 2014

If you’re planning on tweaking or updating your CV this weekend, here are some top tips on how to write the perfect nanny, housekeeper or other private staff CV:

  1. Don’t title your CV, “Curriculum Vitae”. There is no need to do this. Title it with your full name, along with all your contact details. This way, the consultant knows whose CV they’re looking at.
  2. Keep it to 2 pages. Your CV is not a story, don’t waffle. Keep it short and concise.
  3. Choose a format and stick with it. Don’t change it half way through. Keep the font the same size, type and colour throughout.
  4. Put your work history in chronological order. Starting with your most recent position.
  5. For each of your past jobs include:
    1. The start and end date
    2. The position you held
    3. Where the position was based
    4. The name of the family you worked for.

It’s best to put this in bold so it is really clear to the consultant.

  1. When describing the job…if you are a nanny, include the ages of the children you cared for at the start of your employment and briefly outline the duties you carried out.
  2. Include contact information for all of your referees. The more information the better, include their home address, email address and phone numbers.
  3. Keep your CV up to date. Include all of your relevant work history details, right up to the present, making sure there aren’t any gaps in your work history.
  4. Highlight your skills: Skills such as a driving licence or second language should be presented clearly on your CV.
  5. Give your CV to a friend to read. You may have left out some information, or written something that isn’t inherently obvious to someone who doesn’t know you.
